Boys and girls club plans 5K

Boys and Girls Club of Van Buren will hold a 5K run on Saturday, May 11.

The benefit for the club also will include a one-mile fun run for walkers, according to Cindy Faldon, chief professional officer for the club.

Route for the 5K run and one-mile walk will be decided at Monday night’s city council meeting when alderman are asked to close certain streets for the club fundraiser.

Cost is $20 if pre-registered by May 1. T-shirts are guaranteed for only those who pre-pay by May 1. Cost is $25 the day of the race.

Early registration should be mailed or brought to the Boys and Girls Club, 1403 City Park Road, P.O. Box 443, Van Buren, AR 72957.

Race-day registration and packet pickup will begin at 7 a.m. May 11.

Faldon said the event will not be canceled due to rain alone.

“The safety of all participants and volunteers is our primary concern,” Faldon said. “If weather conditions present an imminent danger to participants at 8 a.m. the race will be postponed by 30 minutes. If conditions have not improved at 8:30 a.m. the race will be canceled.”

No refunds will be given.

Faldon said the fundraiser also is designed to promote healthy lifestyles for the children at the club and the community.

Boys and Girls Club of Van Buren it all all-time high on Tuesday with 249 kids. Through the first three months of 2013, the club has given 10,670 snacks to the kids.
