Classes will begin Sept. 9.

Citizens Police Academy is a program committed to increasing community awareness and enhancing understanding between the citizen’s of Van Buren and its officers, according to Detective Jonathan Wear, CPA coordinator.

“This is the final CPA class that will be held in our current location,” Wear said. “CPA classes will resume after we are moved into the new police department location.”

Construction is underway on a new police department on Fayetteville Road to replace the existing VBPD on South 11th Street.

CPA classes last about three hours, one night a week, beginning at 6 p.m. Classes consist of hands-on training workshops. There also will be one Saturday for range day, ride-a-long with an officer and one night for graduation.

Class and materials are free.

Applicants must be 21 or older and pass a background check, which will be limited to criminal history and warrant information.
