A man accused of beating his ex-girlfriend’s 65-year-old father pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Crawford County Circuit Court.
George Fowler, 45, of Fort Smith is charged with second-degree battery, felon in possession of a firearm and habitual offender. Fowler has eight previous felony convictions.
Crawford County sheriff deputies responded to a call May 13 at 8234 Old 81 Loop in Rudy. The resident told police that Fowler had shown up at him and banged on the door looking for his ex-girlfriend, the man’s daughter.
According to the police report, when the 65-year-old man answered the door, he asked Fowler to leave, but Fowler refused and became agitated.
The man then retrieved a Mossberg .410 shotgun and again asked Fowler to leave, and the two began to fight. Fowler put the older man in a “choke hold,” then left, taking the shotgun with him.
Fowler told police he was acting in self defense, and only took the shotgun to prevent being shot. He later gave the gun to a friend who turned it in to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department.
Fowler told police he never intended to get into a fight with the older man.
Though the older man retained some minor injuries from the altercation, he refused medical services, according to the police report.
Fowler’s attorney with Fields E&W entered the not guilty plea on his behalf and waived formal arraignment before Judge Gary R. Cottrell.
