Nov. 11 events to honor veterans

Veterans Day celebrations in Van Buren on Monday, Nov. 11, will include both a parade on historic Main Street and a ceremony hosted by the Junior ROTC at the high school.

Veterans will be recognized by the Van Buren High School Junior ROTC during the Veterans Day Ceremony in the Clair Bates Arena at 8:45 a.m.

This ceremony is open to all military veterans and those who wish to honor them. Master of ceremonies will be Cadet Enoc Henriquez and the ceremony commander of cadets will be Cadet Cooper Snowden.

Van Buren High School Honors History classes will present speech topics to share with the military veterans. After the ceremony, there will be refreshments provided by the FCCLA Club in their classroom for the veterans attending and their guests.

Van Buren’s 12th annual Veterans Day Parade will be held that same day beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Main Street.

The parade begins at the Crawford County Courthouse and will travel east on Main Street to the First Baptist Church parking lot.

Planning is under way for the parade. Volunteers and participants should contact Les Thomas Jr. at (479) 652-3374 or e-mail vbvetparade@gmail.com.

Fort Smith’s Veterans Day Parade will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at Chaffee Crossing.

Veterans organizations from all branches of the military, area police, fire and county sheriff’s departments, school groups, civic organizations, car clubs and other community organizations are encouraged to participate in both parades.
