The Van Buren School Board appointed a new member Monday.
During a special meeting, the panel appointed Theresa Bell to fill a vacant seat on the board. She will replace member Mark Hurst, who represents Zone 2, who resigned from his post May 26 because of family obligations and time constraints.
Board members earn no annual pay and serve five-year terms. Because Bell replaced Hurst midterm, she will serve on the board until the next school board election in September, where she will be required to run if she wishes to resume her serving, according to Shari Ross with the Van Buren School District.
In other business, the board approved a bid to replace an aging heating, ventilation and air-conditioning unit at Northridge Middle School. The replacement will be purchased at $11,556 and will be installed before school begins Aug. 18, Ross said.
