Spinach Festival Saturday

Activities for all ages will be at Alma’s 2014 Spinach Festival Saturday, April 19.

Icon Amusements will have a custom-made bouncy obstacle course the length of a football field, a four-station power bungee jump and rolling “bubble” inflatables.

The amusements will open April 18 from 5-9 p.m., and the day of the festival from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

At least five local bands and singers will perform at the festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., including Destiny Goss, Caving In, Bill Van and the Banjo Man, Ashley Rogers and New Creation Gospel Band.

Alma’s Masonic Lodge will start things off with its yearly pancake breakfast from 7-10:30 a.m.

A spinach eating contest will be held at noon with both a youth division for up to age 18 and an adult division.

Participants should be at the entertainment stage at 11:45 on festival day. There is no need to sign up, and the one who eats the most spinach wins.

Alma Rotary Club’s Spinach Drop will follow the eating contest. Proceeds go to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Alma.

Members of the club will be selling tickets prior to the Spinach Festival and at their booth during the festival. The ticket stub is retained by the purchaser, the ticket is placed randomly on a grid.

A representative from Rotary will drop Spinach from the top of a fire engine ladder. Whoever owns the ticket matching the square of the grid where the spinach lands wins a share of the ticket sales.

Other attractions include a mechanical bull, Daisy BB gun range, climbing wall, carnival games, petting zoo, inflatables, pony rides, a book sale at the Alma Public Library, a quilt show with raffle and an antique tractor show.

The Alma Area Chamber of Commerce will have an information booth and T-shirts with the festival’s official logo.

A number of food and craft vendors will be there, as well a few other activities, Such as Build-A-Pal mobile workshop, similar to Build-A-Bear. The first 35 children will get a free stuffed animal.

Also during the festival, Alma Partners Club will hold its annual 5K Dog Jog to raise money for Alma Special Olympians. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. and the 5K starts at 8 a.m.
