Summer schedule sizzles at Alma club

Kids will stay busy this summer at the Boys and Girls Club of Alma with a schedule that includes a semi-professional wrestling match, a summer program with weekly themes, and free or reduced priced meals.

To kick off the summer, the Alma Club will have another night of wrestling matches Saturday, June 1 with Southern Alliance Wrestling.

A Christian-based wrestling alliance, SAW is providing the event as a fundraiser for the club, said Marcus Battles, chief professional operator for the Boys and Girls Club of Alma. Wrestlers are paid only $50 each, with all proceeds from ticket and concession sales going to the club, Battles said.

Tickets are $5, but kids 5 and under get in free. There is a 5 p.m. meet and greet with the wrestlers, and a 6 p.m. bell time for the first match. The event is expected to last about two hours, Battles said.

Christian rappers Big Rev and Rod will give a special performance during the event.

The Alma club will be closed from May 24 to June 9, but will begin its summer program June 10. The eight-week program will go through Aug. 2 and cost $15 per week for each child participating.

The club will be open Monday-Friday during each week of the program, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Kids will get breakfast, lunch and an evening snack every day.

Each week of the program will have a different theme. Themes are: Water Play, Emergency Management, All Sports, Patriotic Independence, Craft, Tech, American Idol and Reading Counts.

That week’s agenda will support its theme, Battles said. He gave the example of Water Play Week, which will have activities expressed through core areas such as reading, math, fitness, science and computer…and of course, getting wet.

Busing for the program will be available for kids who have their complete membership filled out and their membership fee paid, Battles said. Kids must sign up as early as possible, he said.

Alma Club also is offering a free or reduced price meal program, which began May 6 and is set to continue indefinitely.

Breakfast is served 7:30-8:30 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m, Monday through Friday.
