Norman “Hoopie” T. Barkley, 79, of Dover went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Russellville. The son of Doyt and Maude Barkley, he was born April 6, 1934, in Loudon County, Tenn. He married Nancy Wilkerson on June 5, 1954, in Loudon County, Tenn., and worked as an electrician with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Chapter 295. He was a member of the Hatley Missionary Baptist Church where he served as choir director for many years. He enjoyed fishing, watching TV, vegetable gardening, especially tomatoes and green beans, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Doyt Barkley.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Nancy Barkley of Dover; five children, Susan Reed and husband Randy of Lonsdale, Tommy Barkley and wife Betty of Clarksville, Terre Taylor and husband Dudley of Russellville, Janet Petty and husband Jim of Van Buren and Michael Barkley and wife Carla of Dover; grandchildren, Carrie Gifford and husband Jeff of Bigelow, Amanda Underhill and husband Jordan of Mountain Home, Kaleb Barkley of Clarksville, Jeffrey Watson and wife Karie of Bella Vista, Jim Taylor and wife Casey of Russellville, Hannah Petty of Fayetteville, Logan Petty of Van Buren, Heath Barkley and Eric Barkley, both of Dover, Jerrod Branch and wife Megan of Russellville; great-grandchildren, Emma Gifford and Laney Gifford, both of Bigelow, Karson Underhill and Whitley Underhill, both of Mountain Home, Karleigh Beth Watson of Bella Vista, Hagen Taylor, Gray Taylor, and Kaida Branch, all of Russellville; and several extended family members.
Funeral was Nov. 12 at Hatley Missionary Baptist Church in Dover. Pastor Patrick Trusty officiated. Burial was at Rest Haven Memorial Park in Russellville by Humphrey Funeral Service.
