Steve Chafin

Steve D. Chafin, 60, of Alma entered into rest on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, in Fort Smith. He was born March 2, 1953, in Van Buren to the late Theo and Ruth Chafin. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Fort Smith and Old Fort Gun Club and an employee of Triangle Supply. He was preceded in death by his sister, Karen White.

He is survived by his loving wife of seven years, Lori; one stepdaughter, Amanda Hudson of Fort Smith; one stepson, Jeff Jedlicka of Fort Smith; one brother, Larry Chafin and wife Suzie of Ft. Meyers Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Brenda Whitaker and husband Marc of Alma and Leslie Harris and husband Jim of Fort Smith; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was Oct. 4 at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith with interment at Evergreen Cemetery in Alma.

Pallbearers were Marc Whitaker, Jim Harris, Drew Harris, Neal Hefner, Chase Inselman and Will Hubbard.

Leland Johnson

Leland K. Johnson, 91, of Van Buren died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, in Van Buren. He was born Sept. 9, 1922, in Todd County, Minn., to the late Casper and Gudrun Johnson. He was a retired senior chief petty officer with the U.S. Navy. In his 27 years, he served on the USS Tulsa, USS McKean, USS McDougal, USS Hamul and the USS Walker. He was awarded the Unit Emblem for service in defense of the Philippines between Dec. 7, 1941, through April 9, 1942. While serving on the USS Tulsa, he was awarded the Bronze Star of Valor and medals for Asiatic Pacific, Philippine Defense, Philippine Liberation, Japanese Occupation, American Defense, Korean Service, China Service and United Nations. He was awarded the National Defense and Good Conduct medal eight times. He loved his country dearly. He attended St. Michael’s Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Johnson; a son, Kevin Johnson; and a sister, Helen Potepan. Leland was a special man and will be dearly missed.

He is survived by two daughters, Stephyne Rupp of Crawford County and Rosa Emberton and husband Allen of Van Buren; and a sister, Carolyn Doleshal of Arcadia, Calif.

Graveside memorial service with military honors will be 2 p.m. Monday at the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.

Pete Clenney

Pete Norman Clenney, infant son of Daniel and Alesha Clenney of Uniontown, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at a local hospital.

He is survived by two brothers, Keith and Clayton Clenney of the home; maternal grandparents, Lisa and Jimmie Johnson of Natural Dam; paternal grandfather, Danny Clenney of Uniontown; maternal great-grandmother, Evelyn Farrel of Clinton; and paternal great-grandmother, Elva Clenney of Hot Springs.

Graveside service was Oct. 3 at Sarah Grove Cemetery in Cedarville under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home in Van Buren.

Madison Fisher

Madison Nikole Fisher, infant daughter of David and Bethany Fisher of Van, Buren died Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at a local hospital.

She is survived by a sister, Macayla Fisher of the home; maternal grandparents, Mike and Marcilla Croslin of Van Buren; paternal grandparents, Fredia and George Fisher of Van Buren; maternal great-grandfather, Squirrel Croslin Jr. of Vian; and paternal great-grandmother, Thelma Morris of Arkoma.

Funeral was Oct. 4 at Ocker Memorial Chapel with burial at Fairview Cemetery in Van Buren.

Melissa Ceola

Melissa Ann Ceola, 34, of Barling died Monday, Sept. 30, 201, at a local hospital. She was born Aug. 30, 1979, in Fort Smith. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by her husband, Michael; a son, Christian Ray Williams-Pussey of Chicago; mother and stepfather, Laura and Cecil Blakemore of Fort Smith; father and stepmother, Jimmy and Laurna Williams of Bentonville; a brother, David Henry Williams of Rantoul, Kan.; maternal grandmother, Mary Brown of Shawnee, Okla.; paternal grandparents, Roger and Emma Williams of Fanshawe, Okla.; and maternal great-grandmother, Louise Stapleton of Arizona.

Cremation was under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.

Kenneth Steele

Kenneth Wayne Steele, 70, of Gans died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, in Tulsa. He was a self-employed truck driver leased with North American Trucking Co. and attended the First Presbyterian Church in Sallisaw.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church in Sallisaw with burial of cremains at a later date under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home in Van Buren.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda; three daughters, Cindy White of Lavaca, Angie Hotella of Gans and Ronda Wilcox of Texarkana, Ark.; four sisters, Lucy Tackett of West Plains, Mo., Mary Martin of Wasco, Calif., Barbara Staples of Lucedale, Miss., and Virginia Wiseman of Oakland, Miss.; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Lizzie Elder

Lizzie M. Elder, 97, of Van Buren died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, in Van Buren. She was born Feb. 14, 1916, in the Barnes community. She was a housewife, of the Assembly of God faith and the widow of John Elder.

She is survived by two daughters, Grace Ingram of Ozark and Evelyn Hardcastle of Van Buren; a son, Larry Elder of Ozark; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark with burial at Highland Cemetery in Ozark.

Pallbearers will be Paul Zolliecoffer, Jimmy Wayne, Mike and Lionel Elder, Rusty Barnett, Kenneth Childers and Dee Kirby.

Robbye Patterson

Robbye Faye Patterson, 86, of Alma died Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at a local hospital. She was a homemaker, secretary for Oklahoma Truck & Supply Co. in Van Buren and member of New Heights Baptist Church in Alma.

She is survived by her husband, Ralph; a son, Gary Patterson of Alma; a brother, Roy Plum Jr. of Alma; a grandson, Rick Patterson and two great grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Ocker Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Gracelawn Cemetery in Van Buren.

Pallbearers will be Rick Patterson, Logan Patterson, Junior Plum, Mark Gentry, Robert Spearman and Randy Coleman.

Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
