Roger William Benham, 67, of Mulberry died Sunday, April 20, 2014, at a local hospital. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mulberry and a retired school teacher, starting his teaching career at Lamar Schools. He retired from Mulberry Public School System in 1996, after 25-plus years as principal and superintendent. He later went back to work as elementary principal at Ozark where he retired a second time. He was born Jan. 31, 1947, in Chickasha, Okla., and widower of Beverly Benham.
He is survived by his wife, Melba; mother, Dorothy Benham of Mulberry; a daughter, Nicole Shoemake of Centerton; two stepdaughters, Mary Joslin of Mulberry and Sarah House of Fayetteville; a son, Grant Benham of Mulberry; two stepsons, Jason and Joshua House, both of Mulberry; a sister, Sue Plattner-Smith of Fort Smith; a brother, Ron Benham of Cambridge, Mass.; and five grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Mulberry with burial at New Cemetery under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Alma.
Pallbearers will be Adam, Ross, Brad and Seth Plattner, Larry Smither, Hayden Shoemake and Noah Johnson.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
