College Football: Tech preps for final homestand

RUSSELLVILLE — The Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys football team (4-5, 4-4 Great American Conference) will return to the friendly confines of Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field for the final two games of the 2013 season, opening the final homestand Saturday against Southeastern Oklahoma (2-7, 2-6 Great American Conference). Kickoff from Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field is set for 2 p.m.

The Wonder Boys are coming off a big 26-17 win at East Central, where Arkansas Tech used six ECU turnovers to boost their effort.

Tech holds a 9-3-1 all-time record against the Savage Storm, including a 2-0 record since the two teams joined the Great American Conference. Thanks to a scheduling quirk, the Savage Storm are making their third consecutive trip to Russellville.

Meanwhile, Southeastern Oklahoma is entering the game on a three-game skid. Despite boasting the third-ranked total offense in the GAC, the Savage Storm are the most penalized team in the GAC, giving up 83.2 penalty yards per contest. The Savage Storm have managed to put points on the board without much difficulty this season, but have been one of the most unpredictable teams in the league.

After putting up 56 points in a 56-50 shootout win over Southern Arkansas in their season opener, the Savage Storm took then-No. 9 Henderson State to the limit, forcing the Reddies to rally in the fourth quarter to escape from Durant with a 44-35 win.

Just a few weeks after that, previously winless Northwestern Oklahoma rallied to take a 25-21 win over the Savage Storm in Alva, Okla.

And despite the somewhat lopsided final score in last week’s 42-10 loss to Harding, the Savage Storm held pace with the Bisons until the fourth quarter, trailing 14-7 at the half and 21-10 entering the final 15 minutes of play.

The game can be heard locally on 100.9 KWKK-FM, with the pregame beginning at 1:30 p.m. Live video, audio, and statistics are also available at www.arkansastechsports.com.
