College Round-Up: Golf for Oct. 2

A-State women’s team claims 3rd at ORU Shootout

TULSA — Led by three players finishing among the top 25 individuals, the Arkansas State women’s golf team completed the ORU Shootout at the Meadowbrook Country Club in third place among 18 teams on Tuesday with a season-best 914 total score.

The Red Wolves collected their second top-five finish of the season in as many tournaments, also completing the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational in fourth place. Over the course of its first two tournaments, A-State has finished ahead of 26 teams and had three players finish among the top-25 individuals both outings.

Four of A-State’s five competing golfers turned in their best three-round scores of the young season at the ORU Shootout, including sophomore Abi Laker, junior Megan Garland, junior Marie Couffignal and freshman Maci Arrington. The Red Wolves were led by a third-place effort from Laker, giving her four career top-five finishes.

Laker posted a combined 223, including rounds of 74-75-74, to end the tournament only one stroke behind runner-up Vanessa Johnson of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. UALR’s Sofie Kuarnstrom claimed medalist honors with a total 216.

Garland, in her first year with the Red Wolves, ended tied for fifth place with a 225 to pick up her second top-20 finish. Garland shot a 74 for both the first and third rounds and carded a 77 for the second 18 holes.

A-State returns to action Oct. 14-15 when it will host the Lady Red Wolf Classic at the Sage Meadows Country Club in Jonesboro.

Trojans Win HBU Husky Invitational

MONTGOMERY, Texas — The UALR men’s golf team placed first at the HBU Husky Invitational at Wood Forest Golf Club on Tuesday.

After entering the day four strokes back of the lead, the Trojans combined for a team score of 285 to finish at 844 for the tournament, one stroke ahead of runner-up ULM.

The win is UALR’s first since the Red Wolf Intercollegiate at Ridge Point CC in August 2012.

ULM’s Charlie Macneal captured medalist honors, finishing a shot ahead of Calderon and Zimmerman at six-under 207. Macneal opened with rounds of two-under 69 and four-under 67 on Monday before closing with an even-par 71 in the final round.

The Trojans return to action on Oct. 7 at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in Raleigh, N.C.

Kvarnstrom captures medalist honors

TULSA — Junior Sofie Kvarnstrom fired a final-round score of three-under 68 to capture medalist honors at the ORU Shootout, presented by Bob Hurley Auto, at Meadowbrook CC on Tuesday.

Kvarnstrom held a one-stroke lead after the first two rounds of play before turning in the low round on Tuesday to pull away for the six-stroke victory.

The Trojans (920) placed fourth of 18 teams, with Lamar (899) taking first-place honors and host Oral Roberts (913) earning the runner-up finish. UALR finished six shots back of third-place Arkansas State (914).

Tuesday’s first-place finish is the third of Kvarnstrom’s college career, but the first in her career as a Trojan. She earned medalist honors in two events as a freshman at Western Carolina during the 2011-12 season.

UALR competes next at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial in Springfield, Mo., beginning Oct. 14.
