Lady Lions To Host Lady Tigers In Nonconference Play
FORT SMITH — Fresh off a two-match, Heartland Conference road swing through the Lone Star State, the UAFS volleyball team will return to the home confines of the Stubblefield Center on Tuesday to host nonconference foe East Central University.
First serve will be at 6 p.m.
Following the match, the UAFS athletic department will host its annual Moonlight Madness, a celebration of the official start of preseason basketball practice. During Moonlight Madness, fans will get an early glimpse of this year’s Lions and Lady Lions basketball teams as they compete in intrasquad scrimmages as well as skills competitions such as a 3-point shootout and slam dunk contest.
Fans will also have the opportunity to meet and greet players and coaches after the event.
The Lady Lions will carry a six-match winning streak into their match against the Lady Tigers. UAFS (12-6) is coming off a pair of road wins against St. Mary’s and Texas A&M International and currently sits atop the conference at 9-0. UAFS is the only unbeaten league team.
It will be the seventh meeting in the all-time series between UAFS and East Central. UAFS leads the series 6-0.
East Central, which competes in the Great American Conference, is 6-12 overall and has lost six consecutive matches.
The Lady Tigers competed in the Missouri Southern State Invitational this past weekend and went 0-4 with three-set losses to Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Western State and Southwest Baptist.
Baska earns SBC weekly honors
JONESBORO — Arkansas State senior libero Megan Baska was named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her performance over the weekend against Texas State and UT Arlington the league announced Monday.
This is Baska’s 11th career Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week award, which is the SBC record for career DPOW awards.
Baska, a senior from Overland Park, Kan., totaled 43 digs during the two matches for a 4.30 digs per set average. Against Texas State, she recorded 22 digs for a 4.40 digs per set average and followed that performance up with 21 digs for a 4.20 digs per set average against UT Arlington.
For the season, Baska has 371 digs for a 4.47 digs per set average, which ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference. Her season high came against Memphis Sept. 17 when she recorded 29 digs in the 3-1 A-State victory.
Baska ranks second on the all-time career digs list at Arkansas State with 1,938 digs and a 4.53 digs per set average. She is 62 digs shy of becoming only the second player in Arkansas State history to record 2,000 digs.
The Red Wolves return to the court Oct. 18 at home in the Convocation Center against ULM. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
Burchfield grabs SAA weekly honors
CONWAY — Hendrix College senior outside hitter Katie Burchfield was named the Southern Athletic Association Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
The Cabot native hit .355 and averaged 4.00 kills and 3.88 digs per set as the Warriors went 2-0 at home over the weekend. Burchfield recorded a season-high 19 kills and hit .364 with 13 digs and two blocks in Saturday’s three-set sweep of Millsaps. In Sunday’s five-set win over Birmingham-Southern, Burchfield hit .344 with 13 kills, a season-high 18 digs and three blocks.
Burchfield and the Warriors will host Rhodes College in a conference match Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
