College Round-up: Volleyball for Oct. 16

Lady Lions extend streak with sweep

FORT SMITH — The UAFS volleyball team extended its winning streak to seven consecutive matches on Tuesday night with a sweep of the East Central Lady Tigers at the Stubblefield Center.

UAFS (13-6) won the match 25-15, 25-20, 25-22.

It was the seventh loss in a row for the Lady Tigers (6-13), who have never beaten the Lady Lions in seven attempts.

Junior outside hitter Michelle Walker, who was this week’s Heartland Conference Hitter of the Week, led a balanced UAFS offense with eight kills, while senior middle hitter Jordan Erz had seven.

Senior setter Stephanie Brock and freshman setter Maja Krstonosic had 18 and 11 assists, respectively. Freshman libero Emily Tripp and senior defensive specialist Taylor Jordan had 12 and 10 digs, respectively.

UAFS will begin the second round of Heartland Conference play on Thursday when it travels to Wichita, Kan., to play the Newman Lady Jets. First serve is at 7 p.m. at Fugate Gymnasium.

Blossoms sweep past Henderson State

MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team recorded a three-game non-conference sweep over Henderson State on Tuesday at home.

Final game scores were 25-16, 24-19 and 25-13.

Senior Holly Schweigert led the Blossoms (11-10) with a career-high 12 kills on 18 attempts with only two errors for a .556 individual hitting percentage, the best single-match percentage of the season for UAM.

UAM posted a .253 team hitting percentage with 39 kills on 91 attempts with 16 errors. The Lady Reddies (3-14) posted a negative .038 percentage with 18 kills on 78 attempts with 21 kills.

The Blossoms saved their best performance for the last set jumping out to a 7-0 lead on the serve of junior Jessica Cuba. UAM hit .435 in the final set with 13 kills and only three errors on 23 attempts.

Senior Tori Bozzo and junior Tasha Evans each added six kills in the win. Bozzo paced the defense with 13 digs, her fourth straight match with at least 10 digs and sixth overall this season. Evans led the team at the net with four block assists. Senior Amy Bazemore turned in her 15th double-digit performance of the season with a match-high 28 assists.

The Blossoms are on the road this weekend with a pair of Great American Conference matches, making a stop in Ada, Okla., on Friday, October 18 to face off against East Central before heading to Durant on Saturday to match up with Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Moss earns GAC defensive player honors

ARKADELPHIA — Henderson State’s Jessica Moss was named the Great American Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week announced by the Conference office Tuesday.

Moss led the Lady Reddies to a 2-1 record for the week compiling 27 kills and a .270 attack percentage for the week.

The junior middle blocker also combined for 14 total blocks while averaging 9 kills per match.

The product of Garland, Texas, had 13 kills in Henderson win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and followed with 12 kills the next day against LeMoyne-Owen.

For the week, Moss averaged 2.25 kills and 1.17 blocks per set.
