UALR rallies for win
LITTLE ROCK — Trailing by two sets in their first home match of the season on Sunday, the UALR volleyball team gave the Jack Stephens Center crowd a thrilling comeback victory to reintroduce Little Rock to Trojans volleyball.
Junior Edina Begic had a match-high 23 kills and 18 digs for another double-double, sophomore Sonja Milanovic had 22 kills and 10 digs for a double-double of her own and junior Marleen de Zoete added 57 assists as the Trojans defeated Sun Belt Conference newcomer Georgia State 3-2 (20-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-21, 15-12).
The teams’ first-ever meeting as conference foes was one to remember, as Georgia State looked strong in the first two sets but the Trojans controlled the final three.
The Panthers (5-11, 0-2 SBC) led 1-0 in the fifth set before the Trojans (9-4, 2-0) took over to win their eighth consecutive match.
UALR is now 20-3 in home Sun Belt openers dating back to 1991. The Trojans eight-match winning streak ties the 1996 and 2008 team for the second longest under head coach Van Compton. UALR had a nine-match run during the 1997 season.
To go with her double-double, Begic added a career-best six aces with five assisted blocks. Redshirt freshman Carolee Dillard added a match-best nine blocks, three of which were solo. Junior Capri Rinodug out 12 Georgia State attacks.
UALR plays host to in-state rival Arkansas State (6-10, 2-0 SBC) on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. before hitting the road. The Trojans play at ULM on Oct. 4 and at Troy on Oct. 6. Arkansas State beat Georgia State and Troy in a pair of five set thrillers this weekend.
Warriors sweep Petrels
CONWAY — The Hendrix College volleyball team swept Oglethorpe University 25-12, 25-16, 25-18 in Southern Athletic Association action at Grove Gymnasium Sunday.
Senior outside hitter Katie Burchfield tied her career-high by hitting .500 with 12 kills and seven digs for the Warriors (11-7, 2-3 SAA). Freshman outside MC Rogers added 10 kills while hitting .444. Freshman right side hitter Natalie Masten added six kills and freshman Holyn Duyck had four kills, 20 assists and four aces. Junior libero Ella Concavage-Nasar came up with seven digs.
Erin Shelton led OU (4-7, 0-5 SAA) with six kills and five digs.
Hendrix will go on the road to SAA opponent Sewanee - The University of the South on Saturday.
A-State defeats Troy in second league win
JONESBORO — The Arkansas State volleyball team moved to 2-0 in Sun Belt Conference play with a 3-2 (25-17, 29-31, 20-25, 25-20, 15-13) victory over Troy Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
A-State (6-10, 2-0) came out strong in the first set by taking a 10-3 advantage after a kill from Kendal Davis and the Red Wolves led 19-10 after a Troy attack error. Troy (5-11, 0-2) was able to get within six points at 23-17, but a kill by Sadie Clark and Troy attack error gave the Red Wolves the final two points and a 25-17 win.
Sarah Kemp led A-State with 15 kills and also registered a double-double by adding 11 digs. Clark and Kelsey Sullivan also reached double-digit kills for the Red Wolves with 13 and 10, respectively. Jackie Gerig also recorded a double-double by handing out 47 assists and totaling 11 digs. Megan Baska registered 15 digs and Clark recorded six total blocks, including two block solos, to lead A-State defensively.
The Red Wolves return to action in a road contest against in-state rival and SBC opponent UALR Oct. 2. The matchup with the Trojans is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the Jack Stephens Center.
