Dragons: Ladies survive Hackett’s push

After winning the 2A-4 West last year, the Mountainburg girls have looked like they might be the team to beat again this year. The Lady Dragons opened conference play with a 46-39 win against Hackett on Tuesday.

But while Mountainburg (11-2, 1-0) won most of those games by blowouts last year, they had their hands full with Hackett (3-4, 1-0).

“That was a tough game. Hackett gave us a lot of trouble tonight,” Mountainburg coach Dan Garringer said. “We played four games in four nights last week and I think we are still a little dead-legged and getting over it, but I have to give Hackett credit.”

Tara Webb scored 25 points for Mountainburg. Kaylyn Moore added 10 and Auburn Peters had eight.

Brittney Locklear kept Hackett in the game with 21 points.

Mountainburg held Hackett to just three points in the second quarter and took a 22-15 lead at the halftime break. Hackett rallied to tie the game at 24 before Mountainburg used a 11-0 run late in the third to take control of the game.

The run was started by a basket from Tianna Barton and ended by one from Moore.

“We had a little spot right before halftime where we didn’t play very well and and then another one at the end of the third quarter,” Hackett girls coach Claude Foster said. “I saw a lot of good things from the girls, we just have to stay consistent and finish off the quarter.”

Gage Cantrell had 17 points and Colton Byers 14 as the Hornets (6-1, 1-0) held off Mountainburg.

The Dragons (1-6, 0-1) were paced by 16 from Lonnie Campbell and Trey Allen with 15 points.

Mountainburg held a 23-22 lead at the half, but Hackett dominated the third quarter and took a 36-28 advantage to the final quarter.

A 3-pointer from Allen pulled Mountainburg within three points, 46-43, but the Dragons did not score again.
