Prep Baseball: Mulberry’s season ends

Viloa’s Devin Brown hit a tie-breaking home run in the seventh inning Thursday to power Viola to a 4-3 win.

Viloa had 11 hits but was limited to just the four runs.

“(Viloa) would get on base and we would strike out the next batter and we had several pick-offs. (The Longhorns) kept making poor choices once they got on base,” said Mulberry coach Jonathan Doss.

Keenan Reeves and Talon LaLonde had two hits each for the Yellow Jackets. Mulberry took a 3-0 lead in the first thanks to a throwing error and James Kleinschmidt’s RBI grounder.

Dalton Reeves had the start and Keenan Reeves came in the fifth to finish the game.

Mulberry finished the season 10-5 overall and was 3-1 in league play to get the conference championship for the first time in the school’s history. The Yellow Jackets were runner-up at the district tournament and runner-up at the regional tournament. Both losses in the the championship game of district and regional were to Scranton — a team Mulberry defeated twice during the regular season.

“These guys wanted to get their heads down, but I reminded them that they made school history this year,” Doss said. “First time to win a conference title. First time to advance to the third round of a regional tournament. Those sort of things are a big deal and it should be a bragging point for them.

“These guys fought with a lot of tenacity. I couldn’t ask for a better group of guys to work with and coach. It was a fun season.”

The Yellow Jackets will return nine players next season.

“We hope we’ll do well next year,” said Doss. “The guys are wanting to start practicing earlier next year and we’re going to need some work.”
