Prep Basketball: Lady Dragons catch break, win semifinals

Tara Webb scored 18 of her game-high 24 points in the first half. Then Mountainburg caught a break in the third quarter when a frustrated Coco Carroll of Brinkley was ejected after arguing a call in the Lady Dragons’ 46-36 victory Tuesday night during the Class 2A State semifinals in Hampton.

Mountainburg (32-2) will face Spring Hill (39-0) in this weekend’s 2A State Championship Game. The game will be played either Friday or Saturday at Summit Arena in Hot Springs. The Arkansas Activities Association will announce the remainder of the state championship schedule today.

“The biggest turnaround happened in the third quarter when their little guard, (Carroll), was ejected from the game,” Mountainburg coach Dan Garringer said. “She had 20 points in the first half, so at halftime I put Colette (Ross) on her, and she really frustrated her.”

Carroll was ejected when Ross forced a jump ball.

“I went to break up a pass and she didn’t like that,” Ross said. “They gave her a technical and when she walked away she said something and they ejected her.”

Kaylyn Moore had 15 points and Auburn Peters seven for the Lady Dragons.

Both Webb and Peters had nine rebounds each. Webb also had seven blocks.

It is Mountainburg’s first state title game appearance.

“We were all crying afterward,” Ross said. “It’s the first time anyone from Mountainburg has played in the state championship game.”
