Prep Basketball: Pointers win first round at Tahlequah

Van Buren wins first round

The Pointers (4-0) defeated Coweta (Okla.) Thursday night in the late game, 60-55 in overtime at the Talequah tournament.

Van Buren had four players reach double digits as both Mitchell Smith and Jason Harms finished with 15 points each.

Ryan Pearson and Quashaun Kursh tossed in 14 and 11 points respectively.

Van Buren trailed Coweta at the end of the first quarter, but took a 24-19 lead at halftime.

Coweta took back the lead, 37-34 before the start of the fourth. Both teams were tied 49-49 at the start of overtime.

“I am very proud of the toughness and competitive spirit we played with. To go on the road and battle a very good Coweta team is perfect preparation for what we will face in the 7A West,” said Van Buren coach Randy Loyd. “There are obviously areas we need, and will, improve upon, but I am very pleased with how these guys are battling and finding ways to win against quality teams.”
