Prep Softball: Alma’s Criswell helps team to win

The Airedalettes swept another doubleheader on Friday as they outscored Huntsville 33-15.

Alexys Criswell, batting fifth for Alma, finished the doubleheader going 4 for 9 with two home runs and 10 RBIs.

Criswell had two-run shot in the first game and added a three-run home run in the nightcap. She also hit a two-run double in each game.

Alma (7-1) faces Greenbrier (6-0) and Vilonia (6-0) over the next two Friday’s to determine the overall top seed and 5A West Conference champs. The Airedalettes travel to Vilonia on April 25 before hosting Greenbrier on May 2.

Only Morrilton (1-5) has defeated Alma this season. The rest of the conference teams have not recorded a win thus far.

Alma opened with an 18-8 win before topping off the sweep with a 15-7 nightcap victory.

Both teams combined to hit six home runs with Huntsville gaining four of them.

The Airedalettes pounded out 22 hits in the first game as Shaylee Sevenstar, Hailey Ostrander, Zoie Lunsford and Cierra Rainwater had three hits each. The other batters had two hits apiece.

Olivia Vinson grabbed the win as she gave up eight earned runs with seven strikeouts and no walks.

The Lady Eagles had a solo shot by leadoff hitter Kaitlyn Walden. Chandler Stone added a RBI double to take a 2-1 lead in the first inning. The Airedalettes came back in the second to go up 4-2 thanks to a two-run home run by Brooke Hoffsommer and a RBI single from Sevenstar, only to have Huntsville tie up the game in the bottom of the frame with a two-run home run by Emily Dotson, who also added solo shot in the fourth. Walden had another home run, this time for two runs in the fifth with two outs on the board.

Alma took the lead for good in the third by adding three runs with a two-run home run from Criswell and had 10 more runs in the fourth to lead 17-5 going into the fifth.

Alma sent 13 batters to the plate during the fourth inning. Criswell reached on a fielder’s choice during one at bat and added a double in her second to finish the frame with three RBIs and five total for the game.

The Airedalettes added just one more run in the fifth and Huntsville tried to rally in the bottom of the frame.

The Lady Eagles began with a 4-1 lead, but couldn’t find a way to cool Alma’s hitters as the game progressed.

Huntsville began the game with a no-out, three-run home run from Stormy Ridenoure and added Miranda Campbell’s RBI single to command its only lead in the game.

Alma answered back with a with a three-run inning in the second. Rainwater had RBI double, followed by a sacrifice fly from both Alora Perry and Sevenstar.

The Airedalettes took the lead for good with a two-run double by Perry and Criswell and led 9-4.

Alma was able to keep Huntsville from advancing beyond second for three innings as it scored eight runs. Vinson gave up just one hit during that stretch and finished with eight hits total along with four earned runs a walk and a seven strikeouts.

Criswell added her three-run home run in the fifth to cap the inning. Sevenstar and Thornbrugh each added RBI singles.

Huntsville tried to close the gap in the fifth scoring a pair of runs on singles by Jessica Adkins and Taylor Bohannon. The Lady Eagles loaded up the bases with two outs, but Vinson struck out the next batter to end the threat. Alma still led 15-6.

The Lady Eagles added another run in the bottom of the seventh for the final margin.
