Sheridan defeated Mena, 10-0, in the finals of the River City Rumble Invitational at the Field of Dreams in Van Buren on Saturday. Both teams were unbeaten to get to the finals.
There were 16 teams from across the state in several different classifications.
Greenwood had a strong showing, going 1-1 Friday and then knocking off Alma 8-1 and Van Buren 4-1 before losing, 4-2 to Sheridan in the semifinals.
Van Buren went 2-0 on Friday but lost to Mena early Saturday, 1-0 and then to Greenwood.
Heritage beat Har-Ber, 2-1 in the consolation final.
Greenwood 4, Van Buren 1
The Lady Bulldogs gave up just one hit and pounded out eight of their own to advance through to the semifinals.
Greenwood’s Kelsy Knox struck out eight batters and had four walks with one earned run to get the win.
The Lady Bulldogs had a two-out rally in the second by scoring three runs before Breanna Vest caught the pop fly to end the frame.
Van Buren scored in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Tori Stafford took the loss after 3 1/3 innings of work. Stafford gave up four earned runs with a walk.
Mena 2, Van Buren 0
The Lady Bearcats kept Van Buren hitless in Saturday’s final game before pairing up the bracket to the River City Rumble.
Lexi Brooks earned the win for Mena with no hits and four strikeouts with three walks.
Mena had nine hits, but was limited to just a pair of runs over seven innings.
Lady Bearcat Autumn Bircher was the only player with multiple hits as she collected two.
Austyn Deere reached first on a fielder’s choice in the third inning. Deere advanced to second on a Abby Killough’s walk, but that would be as close Van Buren would get to scoring.
Lexi Hansard had a RBI double in the first and Brooks added another RBI double in the fourth.
Van Buren 2, Atkins 1
The Lady Pointers grabbed it second win on Friday by manufacturing runs.
Tori Stafford scored on an error in the first inning and Ashton Sangster reached home when Baylor Miles took first on an error.
The Lady Red Devils attempted a rally in the sixth and scored a run and had two runners in scoring position with two outs.
Van Buren 1, Prairie Grove 0
The Lady Pointers sole run came on a series of errors that allowed Vest to reach home from second base in the bottom of the first in the River City Rumble opener for the team.
Deere earned the win for Van Buren after five innings of work with six strikeouts, two walks and three hits.
Van Buren stranded all three of their baserunners in scoring position. Prairie Grove left six runners on base with three ready to score.
Prairie Grove loaded up the bases with one out in the second, but Deere struck out the remaining two batters to end the threat. The Lady Tigers reached base only one more time with its remaining 10 batters.
