Prep Softball: Van Buren drops contest; Alma wins non-league game

Van Buren dropped just it’s second 7A West contest this season and Alma defeated Class 7A Southside on Friday.

The Lady Bulldogs had just four hits, but did all its damage to Van Buren (10-2) as the Lady Pointers dropped just its second conference game this season.

The loss set up Tuesday’s showdown with Bentonville for the 7A West title and the No. 1 seed for the state tournament.

After Fayetteville took the lead, Van Buren moved five runners into scoring position in the remaining three innings, but struggled to advance them home.

Destiny Moses had a RBI single in the fifth with Van Buren’s signature two-out rally. A pop fly to centerfield ended the inning.

Maggie Mabry retired the side out in the sixth, but the top of Van Buren’s line up would start the seventh.

The Lady Pointers put two runners (Breanna Vest and Ashton Sangster) on with back-to-back base hits. A line drive put a runner out at first then an error loaded up the bases with one out. A pop fly to right field and Vest was forced out at third to end the game.

Van Buren had eight hits with Ashton Sangster and Destiny Moses collecting two each.

Stafford started the Lady Pointers with a two-run double for the 2-0 lead.

Stafford absorbed the loss as she gave up four earned runs with two walks and one strikeout. Mabry grabbed the win with two earned runs, a walk and four strikeouts.

Alma 3, Southside 0

The Airedalettes shut out the Lady Rebs and limited them to just three hits in the tune-up before the state tournament begins on Thursday at Dupree Park in Jacksonville.

Alma finished the season third in the 5A West and will face Bebee at 12:30 p.m. and the winner goes on to play at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.

Olivia Vinson had five strikeouts with one walk and scattered three hits over seven innings.

Alma finished eight hits with two from both Shaylee Sevenstar and Hailey Ostrander.

Sevenstar reached home in the first inning after a pop fly from Zoie Lunsford. In the fourth frame, K’la Criswell had a RBI single. Ostrander added the third run with a RBI single.
