JONESBORO — The Arkansas State University men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams will be facing some of the nation’s best in 2014 per this season’s schedule as announced by A-State head coach Jim Patchell.
SThe Red Wolves’ 2014 slate will feature a number of high-profile meets such as the LSU Relays, Texas Relays, Stanford Invitational, and Auburn Invitational among others. A highlight for A-State this spring is the third annual Red Wolves Open, which is set for April 25-26.
“Our outdoor schedule has changed a little bit from last year,” said Patchell. “It’s a stronger schedule which reflects the direction we need to be moving in as a program. We have added a meet at Auburn, which will allow us to compete against another SEC program along with the LSU Relays and the Vanderbilt Invitational. We have also added the Texas Relays, Stanford Invitational, and the Mt. SAC Relays to give our elite athletes some quality competition in order to get those qualifying times need for the NCAA meets.”
The Red Wolves open their outdoor campaign for the second straight season at the LSU Tiger Relays March 21-22 in Baton Rouge, La. The following weekend (March 28-29), select A-State athletes will compete in either the Stanford Invitational or the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays while the majority of the team travels to Memphis,Tenn., for the Memphis Invitational.
Arkansas State starts off April at the Auburn Tiger Track Classic on April 4-5. The Red Wolves will send select student-athletes to the Tennessee Sea Ray Relays April 11-12 in Knoxville, Tenn., while the remaining team members compete in the South Alabama Invitational in Mobile, Ala., the same weekend. The same scenario takes place April 18-19 with the Mt. SAC Relays inWalnut, Calif., and the Vanderbilt Invite in Nashville, Tenn.
A-State wraps up its regular season April 25-26, hosting the Red Wolves Open at theA-State Track and Field Facility in Jonesboro, Ark.
The 2014 Sun Belt Conference Championships are set for May 9-11 at the Bobcat Track and Field Stadium in San Marcos, Texas, with Texas State hosting the conference event. The Louisville Qualifier, which is to be held May 16, will provide athletes with a final chance to qualify for NCAA competition.
The NCAA West Preliminaries for those A-State athletes who qualify is May 29-31 in Fayetteville, Ark., and the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships return to legendary Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., for the second consecutive year on June 11-14. The University of Oregon will serve as the national meet host.
