Pink looked good on Van Buren.
The Pointerettes softball team donned pink jerseys and jogged around pink bases in the annual Pointers in Pink game raise breast cancer awareness and scored 7-3 win against Rogers in 7A/6A-West action.
“We came out and played well,” Van Buren coach Andy Williams said. “The girls were excited about putting this one on, it is kind of a special game. We wanted to play well.”
Tori Stafford was the winning pitcher for Van Buren. Stafford gave up two late runs, but dominated early by giving up only one hit in the first five innings.
“Tori was great tonight,” Williams said. “She had great command and hit her spots. I think we only called two change-ups all night because she was moving the ball around and keeping them off balance.”
Van Buren (7-13, 4-5) scored a run in the first and two more in the fourth to make it 3-1 and added three more in the fifth to make it 6-1.
Haylee Zimmerman’s home run for Rogers (12-8, 6-3) that banged off a sign over the fence in left was the only hit for the Mounties in the first five innings.
“We were pretty inept at the plate,” Rogers coach Mike Harper said. “But I have to give Van Buren credit, too. When we did hit the ball hard, they made some great defensive plays.”
Brittany Vest had two doubles for Van Buren and Destiny Moses also had a pair of singles.
Kinsey Williams had a single, two walks and two runs scored and several good defensive plays, including a diving catch that moved her from second base to right field.
“I hate to brag about my own daughter, but she made some great plays on defense,” Williams said. “We had good pitching and good defense and that is what you have to do to win games.”
Van Buren scored three times in the fifth on five hits to blow the game open.
Rogers put up two runs in the seventh as Jennifer Gonzalez singled and came home to score as Ryan Vaughn picked up an RBI. Vaughn also scored a run.
